Station Four brings you to the interior parade ground, the central open space inside Fort Duffield. This area served as the hub of daily military life. Soldiers assembled here for roll call, inspections, drills, and announcements. It was the fort’s organizational center — the place where discipline, communication, and routine shaped the rhythm of life.
Drills and Formations
Infantry units practiced marching formations, rifle handling, and coordinated movements on this ground. These drills were essential for maintaining readiness, especially during the early months of the Civil War when many soldiers were new recruits with limited training.
Life Between Duties
When soldiers were not digging earthworks, standing guard, or hauling supplies, they spent time here talking, writing letters, repairing equipment, or preparing for inspections. The parade ground was one of the few open spaces inside the fort large enough to accommodate company‑level activity.
